Rugby football refers to both rugby union and rugby league, two
very different styles of the rugby game.
Both styles--or codes as they're popularly called--of rugby football
are nowadays played on both professional and amateur levels in the
UK, although as a spectator sport, rugby union is the more popular
of the two. However, until recently, rugby union was never associated
with professionalism, being an entirely top to bottom amateur sport.
Because rugby football is a contact sport, all rugby clubs frown
upon unfair play, and has resulted in the sport being known as a
"ruffian's game played by gentleman".
The two forms of rugby football have evolved to become part of
the British class divide with rugby union being a popular game amongst
boys in public and grammar schools. Rugby league, however, is seen
to be the sport of the working classes.
Historically, rugby football is said to have evolved from Rugby
School, a public boy's school in Warwickshire, where legend has
it that during a game of football "William Webb Ellis took
the ball in his arms and ran with it."
